Description
Stomp is a painting rooted in rhythm. Inspired by the Chickasaw stomp dance and a time spent on a Native American reserve, this work emerged from a memory of women moving in unison, turtle shells tied to their ankles, shaping the ground into a heartbeat.
At the centre of the composition, three figures — one a dog — dance around a fire in joyous, raw expression. The embers rise into the sky, blurring the line between stardust and flame. It’s a moment where human, animal, and spirit meet in playful unity.
The painting also carries a deeply personal thread — it was finished in the wake of my father’s passing. For a while, I could not touch it. But when I returned, I found within it the spirit of my dad at his happiest: playing drums under the full moon with friends on a hilltop in Menorca. That clear light, the laughter, the rhythm — they’re all here.
Stomp is a reminder of the freedom that lives in joy, in ritual, and in connection.
